Thus we meet Joe Knight. While he sleeps a deep coma sleep, key players in his life — his frustrated parents, his enigmatic soon-to-be exwife, his aloof estranged brother — debate whether to keep him alive.

Meanwhile, as their arguments and reminiscences bounce off the imagined walls around him in his mental prison, Joe seeks to escape and waken from his slumber. Standing in his way are the sharp contours of his fractured consciousness, as well as a barrage of memories, dreams, and fantasies capturing the peaks and valleys that have led him here, amid a lifelong quest to bend fate to his will. And watching over the whole tortured process is The Custodian, a shadowy figure seemingly offering more questions than answers.
